We are all familiar with research in one way or another, but have you ever wondered what goes on behind every investigation, why they’re important and how it impacts our daily lives? Look around you, take a look at your computer, cellphone, the book you’re reading, even the food you had for lunch today, all of these were born from countless hours or even years of diligent and meticulous investigation. Research is essential for human development because we depend on innovation for the good of our health, education, and entertainment. The importance of research must be acknowledged, for its benefits on society have moved us away from ignorance and brought to us abundant wisdom.
To better understand this concept, let’s start from the beginning, its definition. Research is the “systematic investigation into and study of materials and sources in order to establish facts and reach new conclusions.” This means researchers spend their lives carefully analyzing problems using scientific methods in order to come up with the solution to a problem. Research can be done on any given topic, be it technology, medicine or social matters, there just needs to be an established problem and someone interested in solving it.
Doing research is a great opportunity to pursue in-depth studies on a topic of your liking, as Nobel Prize winner in physiology Albert Szent-Györgyi once said, “Research is to see what everybody else has seen, and to think what nobody else has thought.” Remember that the main goal of research is to find solutions and enhance our knowledge.
So how does research impact education? Well very simple, in every way possible! In order to learn and become experts in any given subject, you must read, investigate and be taught by professionals. Conducting research or even reading about it helps with learning because of the detailed information that enables you to clarify any confusion. If you’re dealing with a complicated subject, learning the facts, the procedure behind every step taken to reach a solution, looking at figures and graphs, research will clear many of your doubts and will help you get a better understanding of the content. Research also encourages professional excellence in faculty, leading to exceptional student education. A professor with such expertise will pass on his knowledge to the students in the most detailed and informative way possible.
No one likes to do double the work, there’s no need to reinvent the wheel. Thanks to research, we can skip right to the end and start where others left off. As a university student, you have the opportunity to work alongside your professors and other scholars for a common cause. If you pose a problem, there is more than likely numerous amounts of articles that will help you get a head start on your investigation. You will be using research from scholars before you to answer the questions leading to your solution.
Research universities are hubs for investigation. They are the opposite of short-sighted, instead, they are more likely to spend time and resources on solving problems with no current value as a way to teach their students and test their abilities. This does not mean however, that students haven’t solved problems that have contributed a great deal to society.
“It might be argued that the function of the university is in training young people, developing their knowledge of what is, and augmenting their critical faculties so that they can develop what is to come,” said TTU-CR’s electrical engineer professor Dr. Richard Gale.
Now, you might be wondering what TTU has done to back up these premises. The Lubbock campus and TTU-CR work hand-in-hand toward a common goal—to prepare students for success. One of the many ways we do this is by encouraging engaged scholarship. Those who seek out opportunities and are active learners are more aware of their local and global communities, and therefore, develop academic and interpersonal skills that will benefit them in the future. For this reason, we have what is called a Center for Transformative Undergraduate Experiences, or TrUE. Here we support students with the opportunity to engage in high impact learning practices, such as service learning, and undergraduate research.
On the other hand, TTU-CR is proud to have published its first research paper titled Infinitesimally Small Spheres and Conformally Invariant Metrics, written by our very own mathematics professors, Dr. Stamatis Pouliasis and Dr. Alexander Yu. Solynin. This paper is about isometries of conformally invariant metrics. Both professors worked arduously on this investigation and it is with great honor that we celebrate its publishing.
We are also excited to announce our latest research initiative called the Center for the Global Understanding of Experiential and Sustainable Tourism, or GUEST. The purpose of this initiative is to enhance economies through the generation of new understanding, which expands and enhances productivity through tourism.
What is experiential tourism? It’s a global movement that seeks to balance economic growth that has emerged as an alternative to mass tourism and is meant to preserve and help others understand the cultural, historical and environmental heritage of a destination. At TTU-CR, we aim to engage with scholars across the campus, the US, and the world to establish the pre-eminent center focused on experiential and sustainable tourism. There will be a research center with unique access to tourism on the Lubbock campus, as well as in Europe, the Mediterranean and northwest Africa through TTU facilities in Spain. Texas Tech-Costa Rica will be conducting research in Central and South America as well as in the Caribbean.
Technology is advancing incredibly fast, and as our demand grows, so does the need for research. Our goal as a university is to educate, not only so we can acquire general knowledge, but because we want you to become active members of society and use your knowledge to create and develop material that will enhance the advancement of society.
