Things you didn’t know about: Retail Management

Are you interested in achieving greater sales, substantial customer engagement, and acquiring skills in management and entrepreneurship? If yes, then maybe it’s time to consider Retail Management as your new career path. Texas Tech University-Costa Rica is launching a new degree this fall semester—the sixth major at the University. TTU-CR is adding to its options by incorporating two majors from the College of Human Sciences for those interested in business-oriented studies.

A degree in Retail Management prepares students for jobs in all areas of retail, including corporate administration, sales, supply chain logistics, and many more. Additionally, students will immerse themselves in courses where they can explore the world of marketing research and gain proficiency in inventory planning and purchasing for specific demographic markets. By diving into marketing research, students will learn about the links between producers, customers, end users. They will also become adept at identifying marketing opportunities and monitoring their performance. As a result, they will become experts at detecting how small changes can significantly affect customer behavior.

But wait, there is so much more. With this degree, students will also take courses focused on leadership, fashion, event planning, and even data analysis and technology. It offers a unique opportunity, as it is the only undergraduate university program in the country that allows students to obtain professional certification in SAP, Excel, JDA Category Management, Nielsen, and Inuit QuickBooks.

Yes, you read that right. This is your opportunity to explore both your creative and analytical skills. You will develop a professional attitude that will help you thrive in your future career. As an upcoming professional in retail marketing, there are certain skills we guarantee you’ll master by the time you graduate. Strong business fundamentals are a key to thriving in the profession you’re seeking. Here at Texas Tech University-Costa Rica, we give superior training in the retailing business the importance it deserves. By taking courses in accounting, marketing, and learning all about JDA Software, we will provide you with a necessary foundation upon which to start your dream job after graduation.

Another skill you’ll need to master by the time you enter the job market is professionalism. It might sound silly at first, but a good attitude is a crucial asset in the line of retail because you will deal with customers on a daily basis. Vocabulary, appearance, and attitude are all traits that might seem small and insignificant, but can determine your success as a store manager, corporate buyer, or any other position you may choose to pursue.

These are all skills you can master by putting them into practice. Don’t forget about the amazing Work & Study program TTU-CR offers its students— an opportunity designed for you to work part-time in a job related to your field as a full-time student! Ask our Student Services coordinator to help you find out about the jobs you can apply for, and who knows, maybe you will end up helping buy for the trendiest store in the area by next semester.
